If you have a long-tailed dog (GSD, etc), run the dog's tail through first, and once you've got the skivvy's to the dog's rear end, then put her legs through.
Short-tailed dogs are easier.
I guess they could also be used on dog's with incontinence problems as well, in which case, they aren't strictly for female dogs.
The vet wrap sounds like another good idea!
Most importantly though, any time you have an injured dog, just remember that they feed of your energy. If you are worried or stressed, it will impact them. If your stress rubs off on the dog too much, it has the same effect as stress in humans; that is, stress makes pain more intense. Something minor can hurt quite a bit if you are stressed out and anxious.
Just remember, you know what's wrong, you know it's getting better, and there is no reason to be anxious about it.
hi,
quick update. i went home at lunch and Jonah seems more accepting of it. yes, : P, i know my anxiety will transfer to him---i think of that as it is happening i am sure! trying not to.. : / we are going to slightly shorten the splint (it is too long, about 2 inches longer than his other 3 legs and so you can imagine what that does, and what it might to do his shoulder if left for 2 weeks). the vet said shorten it and re-wrap it. so we will do that this evening (the vet asst keeps her 11 horses on my property). i think that will help immensely. and i will p/up the toddelr socks right after wk.
we do have vet wrap wrapped all around it but that isn't grabby enough on floors. i really think the issue is the length really. he is trying so hard to manage. porr baby.
THANKYOU!!!
Our Xena girl ended up with a peg leg(big stiff full leg bandage) following a pack fight. She accepted it without any problems even to the point of running full speed through the doggy door. Dogs don't really mind and so long as he doesn't get stuck he'll be fine. She had a little bit of trouble the first night but after she figured out how to move with it on she was fine.
hi Cathy,
how long was it on? how did she do after you took it off?
last night we took the whole thing off anmd shortened the spint and re-wrapped it. while the injured part (elbow area) has been stabilized within the splint and cannot move, the splint now doesnt extend all the way to his toes. the foot and toes are rwrapped in cushy cotton w/vetwrap on the outside, but he nca move the knee nad pastern a little and this has made mobility MUCH better. he is doing 100x better on it now. and i am less concerned that he will have issues secondary to the splint afterwards. he has even learned to adjust the position of that leg so as not to soak it with urine every time he goes!
i did pick up the toddler socks and they have helped with sliding!
thanks!! : )
