Depending on which port you're hailing us from your local butcher can be your best friend for this dilemmia. The chewy bits and ends that normally they grind into oblivion for other things are ideal for dogs. I know my brother had a similar issue with his westie in Kosovo since at the time there were no pet stores and you couldn't ship animal parts overseas. He was able to get fresh tendon, tails, ears, etc from a local butcher for next to nothing.
I had to pull a chunk of rawhide from my dog's throat when he was a pup, under 4 months. It was really stuck. I will never give rawhide again. I have heard these stories from others. He gets recreational bones, loves knuckles and hooves especially, and bully sticks are great favorites, but get eaten too fast.
Well, I'm actually in Los Angeles. I got the rawhide treats at Target. (don't hate :-) )
I'll try and find a butcher. I checked at some super markets around here and they don't have soup bones anymore! Amazing.
I do need something for Layla as she's starting to feel comfortable here and she's also starting to become a "puppy"; you know, chewing a little here and there.
