My labrador puppy is now seven months old. I've taken training whit him very slow. He does know the sit and down commands. I can get him to sit in any situation - in a store, outside, inside etc... However, he does not consistently perform the down command anywhere except indoors. I've started to use a prong collar on him to correct him when he jumps on people and only recently with the down command. when I give him a prong correction he still does not perform the down command. He just looks frightened and unsure. I don't want to ruin my relationship with my dog, but I want him to do what he is told, especially when he knows what the command means. What should I do?

1. I would go back to training the down at home, gradually moving to the yard with no distractions, slowly adding distractions and only slowly and gradually changing venue.
"He knows what it means" is really, very often, "he knows the command in the house, with me standing in this spot, with no distractions." He looks frightened because he does not understand yet. Back way up and do some upbeat marker training with him; let him get the confidence that comes from good rewards for good behaviors. "Down" outside is also much enhanced by confidence and a strong bond, because (IMO) it's a more vulnerable position for the dog than "sit."
2. Have you tried teaching what you do want him to do when he would otherwise jump on someone? It's so much easier and so much better for your bond to teach what you do want and to reward for that than to correct for what you do not want.
