Okay after struggling to find a DECENT cell phone plan here in Canada (impossible) I've decided really nothing fits into my budget but my existing (stupid) pay-as-you-go plan for emergencies. I will continue to yell at people for calling/texting as if we lived somewhere with affordable cell plans, and use my cell for road emergencies only.
Thing is, Canadian pay as you go plans don't work across the border. And since I'm traveling a lot to train, I generally NEED my phone south of the border 75% of the time. So I was thinking I'd pick up another (American) pay as you go plan.
Questions:
1. Can I do this? Can I just walk into any mall/convenience store and get a cheap, simple phone and some pay as you go cards, or is it going to be a problem I don't have a US address?
I use a Tracfone...and it's simple economics...I read in a financial column that if you use less than 200 minutes a month that's the way to go (prepaid). Check out their web site...the phones are real cheap and it's only around 10 cents a minute.
Any US cell company that offers pay-as-you-go will let you buy a phone/SIM without an address or anything. Its off-the-shelf stuff. Many people buy SIM cards for their existing phones whenever they travel to different countries so they get cheaper calling rates. I have phone numbers in 6 different countries lol.
Thanks! So far it seems the general consensus online is that TracFone is great except their customer service sucks (fine, I can live with that) and another one people seem to like is T-Mobile.
I like the idea of one phone and two SIM's... Though I am more likely to lose a SIM than an entire phone, so we'll see!
There are phones out there that will actually allow you to put 2 SIM's in them. Nothing mainstream, maybe ebay will have something like that. They are out there though, I know that much.

Hey Jen,
Im in Ontario.
I have a pay-as-you-go plan with Presidents Choice Mobile.
This pay-as-you-go plan will work in the States.
The only stipulation is that you would have to sign up for the Automatic top up option which require's a credit card.
You would still have to use roaming charges in the state's (which is expensive).
Here's a link to the site.
if you click on the FAQ section and scroll down to #15, it will explain how the automatic top up works. http://mobile.presidentschoice.ca/edealinv/servlet/ExecMacro?ctl_nbr=3910&nurl=control/MobileHome.vm
if for some reason the link doesn't work, just google pc mobile and go from there.
just look at the options on the left hand side, and the FAQ section is under Customer care.
