I am working to "charge the marker" and getting started with a 10wk old lab. Is there a source that breaks down behaviors into individual elements. In Ed's eBook I saw a break down for nose touch and heel. Is there a source for more complex behaviors that shows the smaller behaviors to mark. I am hoping to train my lab for Frisbee retrieving eventually. Obviously, we are at a much earlier stage but I would like to build up the behavioral flow charts so that they will be ready when my puppy is ready to progress.
I don't know about behavioral flow charts and all that stuff, lol, but it's a 10 wk old puppy, chill out and spend some time bonding and housebreaking, enjoy the puppy part! It goes by to fast,
Bonding, house training, and crate training have gone very well so far. The puppy is very responsive to short training periods and before I found Leerburg I was using typical verbal commands for sit, down and come which the lab food-focused puppy responds to very well with Zukes and praise. You raise an interesting question about age appropriate training. As I have assimilated Ed's material, I have concluded that once the marker is charged, that I could progress as quickly as the puppy wishes me to. Indeed I do find the puppy to be better than meditation for stress relief and quality of life for me as he opens my eyes to what he knows that I don't.
Over the past couple of months I have completly rewritten and added a lot of details to my marker training article http://leerburg.com/markers.htm
I deleted the old ebook on markers as it was not detailed enough (my opinion) so so and review the details in this article. When I am satisfied with the article Ill put it back up as a new ebook.
In 3 or 4 weeks Ill be releasing a dvd on this first part of marker training.
Perfect Ed, I was just wondering if you had a DVD on marker training. I will be first in line to purchase this! Until then I will be eager to read your updated ebook when it comes out.
I just want to say a big Thank you to you for your excellent website etc. Especially all of the tons of free info that you put out here for us all. It is deeply appreciated! I am very grateful to you and Cindy for all you do!
Sincerely,
Joyce

Me too.
I've been using positive-reward-based chaining training for some time, but marker training is a huge refinement. "Timing, timing, timing" is absolutely a cornerstone of good training, and nothing improves timing and clarifies training, not to mention shaping(!) like marker work.
e.t.a. Not to mention how much I like and use LB videos!
I appreciate your prompt response concerning the marker update for the eBook and DVD. I am hopeful it will assist me in breaking down the complex behaviors of certain activities so that as a novice trainer I can work out the individual elements. I am hopeful that I can flow chart them like you did in the eBook for the nose touch. I believe this will be very helpful to show me how to train more complex behaviors. I'm sure my puppy will teach me a lot also.
The art of marker training is not only timing but how to split an exercise. The master of marker training are those people who really learn how to split an exercise.
This next year I will be producing several DVDs with Michael Ellis. In my opinion he is one of the masters of marker training working dogs.
The goal of my first dvd is to explain and demonstrate what marker training is. Its not designed to teach people how to split complicated exercises.
Our marker training has started with our lab. I listened to Ed's audio on markers training again this morning and improved on several aspects including the number of times I said yes, and worked hard on the 1 second response. As a novice I also have trouble using exactally the same inflection on the 'yes'. Your initial DVD will be muched watched. I listen to your audio books during my 150 mile commute on I-95 every work day.
I am hoping to be able to split behaviors as a way of focusing on my relationship with our lab. I am already paying much more attention to him in terms of body language and responses to me with initial marker training. I am sure splitting will be a long term effort with much trial and error.
Does Michael Ellis have any publications on marker training?
