Hi
I have an 11 month old GSD and one of his ears has never been up.
I have tried pads from Germany but did not work and this bothers my husband a great deal.
Would anyone know if there is anything that could be done with this ear.
I would be grateful for any information.
I am loath to be the bearer of bad news, but everything I've ever heard or read tells me that 6 months is pretty much the last chance to get a dog's ears to stand.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.

Google "Canine Silicone Ear Implants", you can find a lot infor on them. Here is one website that talks about them: http://www.4gsd.net/earsup.html Scroll down to "My dog is over a year, will his ears ever stand?"

It's controversial, for obvious reasons.
Sweet. Dr. 90210 could put these in for the dog and then talk him into some Botox for the droopy eyes and some collagen to make those lips a bit fuller.
I don't think it's a silly idea... If I had a GSD whose ears didn't stand, I'd certainly want them to. It would piss me off if they didn't. Of course, he won't be bred right?
Heck, even in a malinois which no one CARES if it looks like a swamp collie as long as it bites, those ears being up are important (to me at least).

My Tiekerhook dog broke the cartilage in one of his ears when he was 8 years old. He had been in the pool & got water in his ear. Although I kept trying to dry it, some water must have been stuck down deep & he shook it pretty hard every now and again over the course of a couple of days. Anyway, he kept shaking his head really hard and once even accidently slapped that ear against the stucco of the house and broke the cartilage. Unfortunately the "cure" is surgery and mattress stitching which is supposed to tack the cartilage down, but usually when it heals you get a lot of shrinkage and consequently a malformed ear, which is what happened in my dogs case. I would have LOVED it if ear implants had been available back then.
