I love my Mom and Stepdad. They are compassionate, intelligent people who aren't afraid to learn 'new' things, even from their children. We are on the same page more or less where dogs are concerned...THANK GOD. I can't imagine them any differently, and I don't want to. My Mom is tiny but she's like a tiny stack of dynamite. Squirt her in the face at your own peril .
I love the idea of getting the puppy video, and pointing the parents to this website. Backing-up all your advice with an article or a print out may not be a bad idea either. They might give you a hard time in your presence, but maybe they would read something if you left it for them, if for no other reason than curiosity, and maybe it would 'stick'. I sounds like they care, and that's half the battle. My parental units like this site and respect the information available here, maybe Eric's will too.

Can you point out your own dog's good behaviour and tell them the reasons why?
My in-laws were horrified at first when they saw us crate training and being so strict on pack structure etc. But they definitly saw the benefits of the crate when Max got the puppy zooms and puppy psycho's in the house. It also helped that they have friends who have a dog the same age and the difference in behaviour is quite dramatic. Max is so much better, and now they can see the value in what we've done.
Having the comparison can be the most powerful way to convince someone. And it really worked for us, the in-laws are more impressed everytime they see Max.
WOW! I don't think I disagree with ANYTHING any of you said! That's exactly why I came here first! I'm all about "how do you like it" but; I think squirting my mom in the face (whether I told her why or not) would go over like a fart in church, but MAN! My wife and I were laughing out loud! Thanx for all of your help. I'll get the puppy DVD!
P.S. I also believe their heart is in the right place but for being highly educated people.....I don't know sometimes LOL!
If that doesn't work, invest in tin cans filled with pennies, and an air horn.
I feel Eric's pain. My mother tries to train my dog when she comes to MY house. I just put the dog in the crate.
She let the dog OUT of the crate once, and after I picked my jaw up off the floor, I gave Danke her crate command, shut the door, and told my mother, "I have to ask you to never do that again."
Maybe it was the tone, but she never even asked why not. Just nodded, and hasn't done it since. Weird.
