as a back-up for the prong? I use a prong on walks w/Kodee, and since he wasn't fully grown when I got it, I bought a choke chain to use as back up. I never put the choke collar on him unless it's attached to his leash with the prong. He's about outgrown the choke chain, and I was wondering - is there any reason that I need a dominant dog collar for backup, rather than a just buying a slightly larger choke-chain? The reason I ask is just b/c the choke chain is less expensive, and it's worked fine for us in the past. (Kodee has never lunged or pulled the leash while wearing a prong, and he's not "dominant" - just likes to pull towards anything that happens to really interest him, and he's STRONG!)
BTW - when using the prong, attached the leash to the dead-ring of the prong, and the live-ring of the choke collar, FYI.
TIA!

If you don't have issues with the choke getting underneath the prong or otherwise tangled, nope, I don't see why not.
Perhaps someone will chime in with better advise.

Thanks, Alyssa. I was just looking at the dominant dog collars again, and they aren't as expensive as I thought they were. I may get one.
Anyone else have a reason that a choke chain isn't good for backup? The one I have slips fairly smoothly (I don't think it would get "stuck" in a tightened position), but more opinions are welcome. TIA!

Kori, here's what I use, attached to Chula's regular collar (which is now a nice leather one from Leerburg):
http://leerburg.com/pulltab.htm
Her regular collar fits much lower that the prong, so I just clip the pull tab to the regular collar, with the ring part attached to my leash (with the prong) and it works great. It would save you from having to put the choke on everytime you walk him...

I can't think of any great reason, but I still prefer the DD collar. It's lighter than a choke, it isn't noisy, it doesn't have links for the prongs to potentially hook into, and it really has no detrimental affect on my dogs coat, either. I also really like the bolt-snap: it's easy to take the DD collar on and off without getting entangled in anything else.
I thought of using the pull-tab, but the bolt-snap is really tiny. I'm probably being a little paranoid here because my dog is huge, but if he's doing something forcefully enough to unhook his stainless steel prong, I'd be afraid he could break the snap too. I like knowing that in the event of an equipment failure, my back-up is as tough as I know the DD collars are. I'm sure the pull tabs are tough and well made (I have one), and know that the snaps are bronze, but I don't know that they are designed to take the kind of force that a DD collar can take. I just feel safer with a DD collar.

Kristel, I don't have an opinion on the tab. But in the past two years my dogs prong collar has come apart and fallen off twice. One time when he was walking on a loose leash, no tension at all on it. We were walking when all of a sudden one of the links came undone and the collar fell off. No force was involved at all.

Yikes. I've heard that's possible. Scary.
In my experience they've let go at the worst possible moments: The dog was lunging at another dog, or was being corrected for a rank issue and "pop", no prong. It's made me want to be very sure of my back-up.

That time, when we were walking on a loose leash and the prong fell off, I was rattled. I won't say I was in a panic, but suddenly it became very important that I unclip the leash from the prong and clip it to his leather collar as quickly as possible. Of course I was nervous and in a hurry so I was fumbling around and it took me longer than it should have. Hans, on the other hand, when he realized the prong had fallen off, just sat down and waited for me.

i use a martingale as a back-up to the prong. it's worked well for me, i've only had the prong break once on me with teagan (last xmas....one of the few times she didn't have back-up on, since we were in the country), but after having it happen, i'm pretty careful about making sure she's clipped into a second collar (and one she can't slip).
Teagan!
