No, perhaps I am not making myself clear.
Jefferey: It has nothing to do with making a dog think it's Ok to bite his owner. This isn't what happens, it's the CONFLICT that screws up the young dog. It's the fact that when a dog is defensive towards the decoy he loses TRUST which is a really bad thing if you are the dogs owner/handler. When defense is introduced it is no longer a game.
Alyssa: It has nothing to do with whether the dog is biting a sleeve or his owner. An owner should NEVER put his own dog in defense, it creates CONFLICT and causes the dog to lose TRUST. It can even cause a dog to be fearful.
Again, only the most experienced decoys ever work young dogs and puppies. The reason is many times the signs of stress are subtle, by the time an inexperienced person recognizes the signs, the dog may be too stressed and already in defense. Rag and Tug work should be done by owner/handlers with puppies.
Jeffrey, It sound like you are in excellent hands with your club. Listen to your training director as far as how to work your pup, he/she won't steer you wrong and they are there to watch what you are doing and guide both you and your pup.
I guess I'm taking too much for granted basic dog sense. If an owner is putting their pup in defense doing basic tug work, I'd say either A) the owner is pretty oblivious, or B) the dog has serious nerve issues.

Agreed! Which is why I said:

I agree 100% that people need to do rag work and play tug with their pups, beyond that, it's better if the work is left to the more experienced helpers, especially if the owner/handler is new to schutzhund.
I only disagree with you when it comes to inexperienced handlers going beyond rag work and playing tug with green dogs/puppies.
yeah, the Internet is a beautiful thing except those few times loss of voice inflection and tone leads to misunderstanding.
