In Ed's marker training ebook, he says that he is very pro clicker training now - whereas before he did correction training. He even says he feels bad for the dogs he trained in the past with corrections. So does he now advocate training all obedience behaviors, such as walking by your side, with clicker training only? or is does he believe there is still a place for correction/praise training?
Lori - yes, you should finish reading the entire article. Frankly, this is among the very best of Ed's articles, and I plan to incorporate into my marker training - a method I have only recently decided to try. So far, I am very amazed how effective the marker training is compared to previous methods I have tried.
I find Ed's opening remarks about discovering the benefits of marker/clicker training after years of bashing it to be an indication of his high character. It takes a big man to say "I'm sorry, I was wrong". Beyond that, the article is more in depth and has better useful examples than any I have yet read on the topic.
And I also agree, there ultimately there has to be corrections - but first you should read Ed's recommendations for how and when. I have a hard 13 month old GSD and sometimes he just 'gives me the finger' and wants to know what I'm going to do about it.

I second that. I've seen many other (and certainly lesser) trainers who, even after seeing the benefits of new training methods, continue to bash them, mostly because they don't want to admit they were wrong. So, they continue to make dogs miserable, just to save face.
Then again, behind every great man, you find an even better woman.
