We are looking for a reputable breeder to purchase a GSD puppy from. We are in South Texas. We would like a puppy from a working line breeder but would like one with less than extreme drive as suggested in several posts I have seen. We have a local trainer who steered us onto this site who will help us with training for basic obedience and security/home protection. Our target is to have one by Feb, 2009. Naturally, we would love to find one here in Texas, but, if necessary, we can travel. Our trainer forwarded an article by Ed on selecting a puppy by performing several simple "puppy tests". Looking forward to any information you may have to offer.

Welcome to the board and good luck with your search. I think you will find a lot of breeders are breeding for a balance of drives in working lines and not the extremes.
You have the hard part down, finding a local trainer! After that it is all easy.
If you ask potential breeders WHY they did that particular breeding and what they were looking for from each parent it helps eliminate the people that are just breeding two dogs. The more they can talk about a plan that more they have one and personally I kind of like breeding plans.
I have a litter due in December but I don't ship anymore.
My favorite breeder and always will be. He has great dogs ,I have had the pleasure to own one of his offspring and was THE best dog I have ever owned. He matches dogs to family/handlers the best.
