hi,
i am not a PB owner, but have known some really good ones over the yrs. an acquaintance who recently moved to my area has a blue puppy & is planning to breed (she has a few others i have not seen), from some Razors Edge bloodlines---keep in mind i know nothing about PB's at all & nothing about all the PB registries. the blue puppy had MASSIVE bone, SUPER wide head and CHEST-- he looked more like a Neopolitan than a PB except he didnt have a pushed in face at all.
i looked on the internet and found a site with Razors Edge dogs and i was stunned. they are GIGANTIC and super wide and much shorter legged than what i recognize as "normal". the site mentioned not a word about any genetic screening or titles of any kind. they looked completely diff from the pit bulls i have ever seen.
can anyone tell me about this? is there a right and wrong as to type, structure and temperment and etc? does that vary from registry to registry? what is the diff between Am Staffs and APBT's? are hips or elbows or eyes generally screened? or are these not issues with the breed?
just curious!
Urgh, please tell your acquaintance not to breed. Lines like Razor's Edge and Gotti are ruining the breed. These dogs are just bred for size, not for temperament or working ability (a real pit bull is famous for both). They have difficulty getting around because they're so lopsided, and yes, hip and elbow dysplasia is rampant due to so much sloppy breeding. Unfortunately Average Joe thinks that this is what a real pit bull looks like.
I have read online that the ADBA is taking steps to eliminate/not register dogs with Razors Edge in their bloodline. To me this speaks volumes about whether or not is a good bloodline. Apparently the kennel mixed other breeds in to get the huge size.
It seems to me, on the surface, to be one of those lines that have been selectively bred for an extreme type. There are usually problems (genetic) with that.
hi,
thx. that is what i figured. these are not even cool-looking, they look totally un-natural & would not be able to get out of their own way b/c of their bulk and unbalanced proportions. : (
this person/acquaintance wont listen to me i am totally sure. she didnt even know what exact BREED her puppy was, just kept repeating "Razor's Edge" and i said "that's got to be a bloodline, not the *breed*..." b/c i wasn't sure it *was* a pitbull puppy b/c it was SO MASSIVE and only about 3 months. she hasnt a clue about dogs in general, whelping, gestation--certainly nothing about hips/elbows-- and apparently also about the breed itself. i think she paid $3500 for the puppy. really a shame.
thank you for the info.
The UKC has changed its APBT standard to reflect a disapproval for the bully styled dogs. The revisions are noted as "very serious fault": http://www.ukcdogs.com/WebSite.nsf/Breeds/AmericanPitBullTerrierRevisedNovember12008
The only *nice* thing that I can say about the big blue hippos is that most of what I've met have very low dog aggression, mostly becaue they can't work up enough energy to spar. :-/
