I too was looking for a vet that provide the 3 year rabies shot its a good thing I was able to find one in my area. Before that I would take my dog once every 3 years even though it was stated as a 1 year rabies shot.
Lynne,
I just want to applaud you for walking out of the vet office when they would not comply with your request for the 3 year protocal.
I am so happy that you were able to find a holistic vet to go to from now on.
I feel it is important to do what you know and feel is best for your dog. Hopefully, your old vet will stop and think about why you left. I was just thinking that this is what it probably will take for vets to start to change their protocals etc.
Just think if more and more people become educated, and refuse to see these kinds of vets, this is the beginning process to making real change.
I say good for you for realizing that the choice was yours and you didn't take no for an answer and left.
It is a great lesson for anyone not sure or needs some encouragement to go where their business is not only respected but appreciated!
Ok, I'm not a vet, don't work for a vet or have any interest in what a vet makes or not.
But the vets do take on the liability, vaccine makers are no longer liable for any injuries.
I hate to break it to both of you, but the vaccine makers are NOT liable, I don't care if you work for a vet or not.
Look up Lynbrook Farms vs SmithKline Beecham and it's legal precedent that set, then find me some case law that shows vaccine makers being held liable for vaccine damage. The ONLY case in which that could happen would be if they manufactured it using substandard controls and methods.
IF, and that is a big IF the vaccine companies are trying to "educate" vets about the health of animals or not has more to do with the court case I mentioned than anything else. At the time if Vets followed current protocol they were usually immune to punishment. Some vets broke way, and finally all the colleges and the AVMA changed their protocols, much to the dismay and fighting from the vaccine makers themselves.
IF they are reversing their stands it is because of the AVMA and all vet colleges changing their protocols. If they continue to fight that it could open them up to potential litigation down the road. Considering their track record, I'd bet they are doing nothing more than paying lip service to something they fought against for years so they don't open themselves up to lawsuits in the future.
as for the business comments, you can have all the love in the world, but if you can't pay for your license and practice or insurances, you won't be helping many people. Just because you can buy a vaccine for 2 dollars doesn't mean you should perform that service for 2 dollars. that is business, if you don't like then don't do it. and god forbid your dog gets bloat or gets hit by a car or gets an infection and needs a life saving procedure from the vet, how much is their knowledge worth then?
I think in the case of the OP, telling people they can only get a 1 year rabies is their perogative, one I don't agree with and wouldn't see that vet any more for sure, but some of these other generalities about vets need to be held in check because they are baseless.
You missed my point, Eric. I don't think ANYONE is held liable like they should be. Not the drug companies, not the vets. Which is why I prefer to keep my dogs away from vets and their drugs. They can pay for their insurance by screwing up someone else's animals, mine are just fine the way they are, thank you;-)
Yes, of course you have to pay your bills-hence my point about selling things GOOD for the animals in lieu of pushing vaccines b/c they're big money makers w/ridiculous mark-up.
I keep finding myself trying to learn more and more so I have to refer to a vet less and less...I just need to master ortho surgery for my accident-prone guys, lol. Your statement about "how much is their knowledge worth then?" is unfair and not what was being discussed in this thread. This thread was about pushing things known to be harmful, not saying there is no use for vets at anytime, anywhere. You're over-generalizing, unless I read you wrong. I wouldn't say anything I said was "baseless." You may disagree, which is your prerogative, but I think it's far from baseless. It's very hard to look out for your animals' health these days while obeying laws and avoiding fights with vets. That's a fact.
