My 1 year old standard male came back prelim OFA fair on hips. I was bummed, although I know it is not disqualifying. The vet said that he had experience doing OFA x-rays and he is 65 years old and has been a vet for many, many years so I assumed he knew what he was doing. He did NOT put my male under which I was happy about but now I'm wondering if it hurt me on the x-rays. I don't want to have to put my dog under if I don't have to and I don't want to waste money either.
So when I do the official x-rays should I put him under? He is very cooperative.

I am planning on having my dog's hips x-rayed as well (just to find out if there are any problems that could prevent him from competing in agility).
Have you read Ed's page on x-rays? If not, read it, then print it out and give it to your vet.
It's not a question of whether to put the dog out or not, but how straight and clear the vet can get the x-rays. You can see them shortly after he takes them (within minutes, usually). If they aren't perfect you can have them re-taken.
you know, i am thinking about the same thing with Tripper(my crested)-i have a few more months before prelims, but i don't want him put under if he doesn't need it. i would rather pay more money taking multiple x-rays then risking health having him put under.
I didn't know what I was doing for the first x-rays and I never saw them, although I can order a copy of them. He never went over them with me either, he just sent them in to the OFA. I read Ed's article, some if it's over my head, I need to read it again!

Personally I'd have them redone with sedation at 24 months and mail them yourself. A non sedated wiggle can make a dog's hips look terrible even if they're not and poodles have very narrow hips to begin with. If you go to OFA's website there is a pretty good section on how they grade hips.
I had my lab done at 26 months along with elbows, cardiac, and patellas and had a quick dental done to remove some tartar she wouldn't let me get to. When I showed up to pick her up I asked to see the X rays and I was able to pretty accurately see the quality of the shot and angle was correct. Happily my vet and vet tech are pretty good at this.
I won't allow my dogs to be put under for OFA xrays. It's not that difficult for a skilled vet and tech to hold the dog still and get correct positioning and why use sedation or anesthesia for a shot that takes just a few seconds?
The clinic I go to in Stillwater won't sedate dogs for xrays unless the dog is totally unmanageable. I've had my last few dogs OFA'd this way with no problems.
Cool, thanks. Since they came back as Fair, now I'm nervous because they could swing either way, as good or dysplastic. Although I do not think he's dysplastic. He runs, jumps, has good movement. Although I've heard some stories of dogs missing a whole hip and having no symptoms!!
When I had my dogs hips done in Middleton at Morry Links clinic he didn't put her under and she came back excellent. I wouldn't take my dog to anyone that made it their practice to put dogs under for this. I hear if sedation is used it *can*, not will, but can, loosen the hip joint and thus getting a rating not true to what the hips *actually* are.
