I don't have any of those books. I guess my main question is how to keep the diet varied. I've read that people feed so many different things, chicken, red meat, eggs etc. I'm guessing you can't buy these books at the local Petsmart :P

You'd be correct. Or Petco for that matter. Leerburg sells a good deal of excellent books. You might be able to find something at a larger sized Barnes and Noble if ordering online isn't an option for you.

Nope. And they will probably throw you out of the place if you ask for them.
Where are you in Texas? I'll have to search the forum, but there is an awesome sounding raw dog food store in Texas. Maybe you are close.<crossing fingers>
Keeping the diet varied is just as easy as feeding everything you can get your hands on. Of course you know that when starting out variety isn't something you jump quickly into. You'll worry about that later.
Chicken is usually the cheapest for people to get. It is also the easiest edible bone for people to get. Alot of people use chicken parts for the bone content in the diet and then rotate different meats for variety.
Pork would be next on the cheapest list. Also a cheaper way to get red meat in the diet compared to alot of the beef cuts in the grocery stores.
Depending on where you are from in Texas, wild game would be a great option for variety. I rely heavily on wild game, normally deer. It is probably over 50% of my dogs diet.
Feed what is cheap or preferably free. By feeding a variety of animals and animal parts, you ensure that you are meeting any possible nutritional needs you dog has.
Yes! This was exactly what I was wondering about, thank you I live way up north in Texas, little town called Wichita Falls. There is a lot of deer around the town, I even saw two of them in a local park the other day, like ten meters away. If only I'd had a shotgun :P A few days ago my brother in law hit one when driving to work, but he's having it processed for himself o.O There are a couple of meat markets here that have some good deals on their products. Too bad I don't really know any hunters..
There are tons of hunters for you to get out and meet. Let me point you in the direction to make contacts in your area..this IS Texas after all
Try here to start your enquiry and maybe a little target practice...

And just so I don't see a fellow European locked away in Jail, put there by the local Sherriff because he wanted a little roadkill for his puppy, I sent you a link to the hunting calender here in Texas for 2008/2009.
