the metal loop is a shedding blade...they work great on horses but I'm not a big fan of them for dogs other than those with very short hair.
My favorite brush for heavily shedding GSD's (as well as horses) is a rubber curry...you rub the dog in circles with it, the hair just comes out like a dream.
here is a pic of what I'm talking about it, hopefully it'll go through
For times *other* than when they're shedding heavily (when is that exactly lol), a bristle brush doesn't do any good. I usually have good results with a pin brush. Slicker brushes don't seen to get down to the undercoat, to get all the dead hair out, either.
I know exactly what kind of brush that is I used to have one for the doberman... I thought they were only good for short hair, but I will definately get one. LOL The bath went well... and very wet. Dont think he liked it too much but he smells soo much better!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> And some apple spray to top it off! Today I had to put him in his crate while I had some company over for a short time... they were in and out the front door and he will run out any chance he gets. And he done very well, he didnt want in there but he only barks a couple of times and didnt hear another peep out of him.
Meghan I sent you a few pictures, I hope you get them.
I use a soft rubber curry and a shedding blade for Auster. I only use a slicker fro brushing while inside the house because the other two send the fur flying.
