This thread is making me soooo glad I don't live in canada!!!
I would just curl up in a ball and cry if I had to be outside in that cold of weather. I am a wimp when it comes to the cold.

LOL
A good portion of the US is actually NORTH of where I live.
It does, however, get too cold for my single-coated Catahoula as I am sure it is for the Boxers, Dobermanns, and Greyhounds. I also don't like the cold but it can be refreshing - and nothing beats playing in the snow with your dogs.
My favourite kinds of coat are the fleece ones, fake sheepskin and I even made one myself out of fun fur. I find for my own guy that the nylon and less cosy fabrics aren't warm enough (unless they are lined, of course).
With an active dog like my Catahoula I find that the ones that come close to the elbows/legs are more restricting and he doesn't like them as much. Also they tend to rip or come open when the dog is rough-and-tumbling. Knit sweater/turtleneck kinds are the best for movement, and ones with large leg holes or straps under the belly suit him as well (just make sure the straps are well lined so as not to be irritating). HTH

yeah, toronto is too.
i just read that it's going to be a mild winter, but w/lots of snow.
how big is your catahoula angela? i have around 50lbs in my head, is that totally wrong?
i'm impressed that you made your own! i can knit and crochet, but sewing isn't my strong point. i could knit one, but i'm not doing that until i know his destructive propensity with respect to coats.
based on this thread, it seems like dogs of neb's size (less than 20lbs) will get cold, husky genes or no. time to start looking for a nice dog coat for my little midget something that will work well for an active dog, not be cutesy, and stand up to punishment. i'll check out some of the links on this thread, ruffwear, and a few others. i've heard the jackets at old navy are pretty good, and at a good price.
(oh, and i found part of the whistle in his poop yesterday....sheesh.)

Lots of snow this year???? Being on the edge of the Buffalo snowbelt, it can sometimes go either way! Although I'd rather have snow than rain. It makes the outside look brighter when it gets dark so early.
Please post a new picture of Neb. How old is he now? Do think he'll build up some undercoat as he gets older?

I have 3 terriors and when we go camping (it never really gets below 25 degrees here in Elsinore in the winter) where it gets very, very cold with ice on the ground. All my terriors have jackets. If I don't put them on, they shiver, and outside isn't much fun then. My terriors do not have a real thick undercoat.
God bless you and I hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful.

He's 65 lbs. My smallest "little guy" is 50 lbs, he's a Catahoula/Husky mix. One of these days I'll get pics of my dogs...
i'm impressed that you made your own! LOL.. you wouldn't be if you actually saw it. More functional than pretty, lol. Think fun fur toga. I used a lot of Velcro
I actually bought some of the knit sweater style ones at Super Pet. At that time I only had one old dog, and she wasn't destructive. But I did like that they were comfortable, warm and stretchy and did not restrict her movement.
My Catahoula got used to wearing his coats so hopefully Neb will accept them and not eat them.
(oh, and i found part of the whistle in his poop yesterday....sheesh.) Neb sounds like my dogs Bandit and Riley.. I'm always surprised by what I find in the yard. "I *thought* I supervised him... but what the heck is this blue thing?..."

Trust me, you've never seen my sewing.
Maybe I'll get Luc to wear his coat for awhile so Neb thinks its what all the cool dogs do (yeah, like that's likely! ha)
I - or rather he - found an old battery in our yard once! My heart was in my throat! I actually use the whistle for the come command with him - I've started letting him untethered in the house, and he went into his room, climbed up on top of his crate, stuck his head into the box of training/leads/toys up there, and ate the whistle specifically. Little bugger! Anyways, off-topic, but it made me laugh....he targetted it so specifically. Too bad for him having led a bunch of outdoor trips I always have extra whistles!
Oh, I went to look at the coats on Old Navy's site....I could get him a puffy coat with a hood! I'm really going to have to be careful about keeping my more questionable taste in check in buying him a coat, there's so many more 'fashion' choices for small dogs. I'll just have to keep in mind, a coat that the mals at FR won't laugh at him for
