Which do you think is best for occassional, but long term use for arthritic pain? I've been using Metacam, but recently a friend involved in dogs for years told me about Etogesic for pain relief from CCL tear and longer term for the elbow arthritis. I am only medicating about once/week, if that, at this point. Only when needed, if Cerbie exercises a little bit too much and gets limpy and sore.

Hi Stephanie
I'm not familiar with Etogesic. I've used Metacam exactly as you've described very successfully. I think it's one of the safer medications out there for pain relief, Deramaxx being another one.
MY mom has been using Metacam for a long time for her ancient dog, and they just recently last year added Prevacox as well. She was doing well on both of those until the cold weather hit and now she is taking Tramadol as needed too.
But she is 18, and wobbly and really really arthritic. Her liver and kidneys have been fine for over 5 years on the meds although now I'm not sure they worry about that so much, they just want her comfortable.

I too prefer Deramaxx and Metacam if I have to use an NSAID (and I do have a senior on a daily dose), but the big point with all NSAIDs for dogs (because dogs are not as tolerant of NSAIDs as humans, and that includes aspirin) is to do the pre-protocol blood and urine tests so the vet and you have the baseline data and to repeat testing a few months in and then regularly from then on. The other important thing is to be aware of the potential for vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding ulcers.
I think that the gastric distress symptoms to watch for are often not discussed when the prescription is written -- never mind the pre-protocol lab tests.
