I know i am supposed to control my puppy from too much jumping, but i have a lot of stairs at my home that he has to climb up and down. Should i be concerned about this or not?
I'm not an expert by any means, but I know that when I was working with my parents GSD puppy a few years back, the dog wouldn't go up or down stairs until she was around 4 months (I think).
Basically, I feel as long as you don't force her and let her attempt the stairs at her own pace, she'll be fine. My parents GSD has no problems with stairs now and her hips have been evaluated and they look just fine.
Thanks Will, i dont have a problem with my 12 week old GSD climbing up or down stairs (keeping him from leaping off the third from the bottom step when going down is a problem), but i am worried about joint damage.
Hopefully others will chim in with their opinions.
I have heard warnings from many people as well regarding stair climbing/descending. I guess that everything in moderation is best. I would worry a bit if the dog was running up and down teh steps, or running extensively with a jogger or a horse,as just the stress on the joints could cause arthritis at a later date. Unfortunately, I saw this happen to several dogs owned by horse people who went out with owners as young dogs, including a Great Dane I owned 20 years ago who was extremely stiff by 5 years old...the Dane did live to be 14 though.
