I asked last winter how cold it could get that I could leave the dogs outside (with an insulated doghouse) and found that my poor dogs must be missing out as 32 F seemed to be voted the operating temp for a gsd
We got a front in yesterday-- you gotta love Texas-- it was 85 at 2pm and 37 by midnight. The neighbor's cats were curled up as tightly as I've ever seen them tucked up against my house when I came out this morning. How cold is too cold for a cat? I feel bad but I can't take in the whole neighborhood... I'm wondering if I should suggest to the neighbor that they might want to keep them inside at night until this cold snap passes?
Two of mine went outside willingly last night while it was icing, and sat on the railing of the back porch that was all covered in ice, while I let the dogs potty and play.
They weren't bothered at all by it but I did make them come inside.
One of mine loves snow as much as the husky, go figure.
But I would not willingly leave anyone out over night weather under about 40. Actually I would not willingly leave anyone outside overnight period..but I am paranoid
I think in San Antonio you won't have too many dangerously cold nights, and cats are good at finding warm dry spots to sleep. So I don't think they will freeze to death or be hurt by it.....But they would be more comfy inside I'm sure.
I'm not sure what your lower temps are in C, but it depends. Cats that live in colder climates and are outside consistently will develop winter coats and adapt at least somewhat to the cold, same as any animal who spends a lot of time outside (even people, sans fur, will).
my cat mitch lived in toronto as a stray for at least 5 years - his ears are a little funky from frostbite, but he also had a hot air grate near his dumpster to curl up on in the winter.
cats really aren't meant for extreme cold, but i think the biggest problem for your neighbours cats is it doesn't sound like they'd get to adapt to the drop in temperature.
but that seems like a pretty big range of temperatures - 85 is fairly hot.
37 F would be about 3 C.
Texas has huge weather swings like Oklahoma, all of my cats and dogs with the exception of Loki get winter coats despite our weird weather.
It has gone from high 70s here to a snow or ice storm in the same day several times...layers are our friend in the fall and winter!
lol- you should have heard the office yesterday; there was a tiny percent chance of some snow on the NW side of town and people were trying to build snowmen already, hahaha. We curled up in front of the fireplace and I read a book...when I heard the sleet start was I ever surprised! I was sure it must be hail until I turned on the tv and the weatherpeople were all excited.
Glad to know the cats are probably ok. The original one, Tiger, is really sweet and every weekend I remind myself that I do not need a cat. Sometimes (like when she comes and meows at my door) I wonder if they'd know she was missing! She got to live inside with her "owner" (their son) until she graduated from kitten to cat, and then I think she was relegated to the backyard. A few months later she had kittens...
After that horrible ice storm we had this exact date last year I was really edgy about the freezing rain and sleet we got last night. That tinking sound does not bring back good memories at all.
Last year during the three weeks we were without power all of my cats were totally fine.
Our house was the same temp as outside which was anywhere from 20-40 F for the entire time and none of them had any problems. I did put the dog kennel in the living room with blankets over it to insulate as well as several cardboard Cat sized boxes with towels in them for the cats. But everyone did just fine.
