Well a few hours ago, my mom's Chihuahua "Gorda" which means fatty in Spanish, darted out my front door and into a busy intersection. She showed up on my mom's door step 4 yrs ago, and we could never break that habit. We were always very careful about opening a door around her. This time, I had no clue where she was 'til I saw her dart out the door. I had my son in my arms and could not run out fast enough. I searched the whole neighborhood until I ran into her body laying in the gutter. She will be missed.

Thank you all. We are sad, and I'm a bit dissapointed. We actually had her for almost 5 yrs, and the few times she managed to escape, someone was always right after her. I can't help but feel disapointed I didn't try harder to teach her to not run out, or didn't crate her first. I'm sure that's how we ended up with her in the first place.
She was a spunky lil dog, and the stockiest Chi I had ever seen (hence her name). At least I know the last year I had her, she was on raw and her seizures were way far and in between and with the NILF training and excercise, she was a happy dog.
Alex, you did what you could. We all make mistakes. If it makes you feel any better, when I was in college, I left for school, got in my car, got to the school parking lot and looked in the rearview mirror to park only to discover Widget in my car w/me. I had no idea he'd left with me. It must've been funny to watch, but his trick is to sneak out at that instant when you turn around to shut the door. They're so small that they can creep quietly and you never know they're there. He must've been just at my ankles the whole time, and with my big bag, I didn't see him skulking around. Granted, I was probably late and not paying close attention! He did this more than once, but only once did he actually get all the way to school before I caught him.
They are very small and very quick. Forgive yourself.
