I've got a 5mos. old Male WL GSD. How do I determine which size to get or should I just wait til he's older. I'm assuming the regular link size I'm just not sure what length. Is there a standard for my dog.

With an adult dog I measure the minimum that I can get over the head - use a cord and make it into a circle and put it on like a collar and measure.
The minimum size to get over head will usually be long enough to do corrections. I was taught measure neck plus 2 inches.
With the pup buy the collar larger than he needs but smaller than adult, otherwise you'll have too much loose chain. Also I don't generally use check chains until at least 6 months old, usually at about 8/9 mths.
I'd wait until the dog is at least 11-12 months old. Then the skull should be pretty well full size, then you won't be buying 2nd or maybe 3rd collars. Unless you get a inexpensive chrome one until he grows out of it then get a stainless steel or curogan one later after he has reached a higher level of maturity.
Thanks for the replies...I went ahead and bought one before I was able to read the replies...I got the 21 so he can grow into it. I mainly got it so that he doesn't get that flat fur spot on his neck from the regular collars, not really for training purposes.

What you can do with a fursaver is rather than clip the lead to live ring you can clip it to one of the links to keep the chain to the correct length if it's a bit big.
