I have a 2 year old Lab that loves to roll in cow manure. I have plugged every hole in miles of fence of the farm next door but now he is digging under the fence to get to the prize. Any answers out there? Thanks, Danny
Well, you can't really stop a dog from rolling in things that smell delicious (to him).
You can prevent him from getting to them, though.
First, I would really focus on getting a reliable recall, so that you can prevent him from leaving the yard when you are present. If he is supervised outside, and has a dependable recall, voila, problem solved.
1. Keep the dog on a leash, you will never have this problem again. You can also build him his own escape proof yard. I had to do this myself because I had one dog that was a houdini. I never regretted it.
2. Run a hot wire along the bottom of the fence, or use an invisible fence along the fence line. (I don't really think zapping a dog is a good substitute for management and training, but it will work).
Good luck.
Edit: I posted at the same time as Alyssa, her post is better than mine, but I'll leave it anyway
Not any more than I can stop my dog from eating poop by correcting her every time she touches it.
It's easier to keep it away from her (by picking it up as soon as it hits the ground), and have a really good leave it command when I see her prowling around looking for a missed nugget.
She obeys when I'm around. If I turn my back for a heartbeat, she snags a piece. It's a self-rewarding behavior, as is rolling in manure. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Its his instinct to roll in it to hide his scent. Many hunting dogs will do this to get close to prey, and many hunters consider this a good thing. Your best bet is catching him in the act and as Alyssa said correcting and recalling or not giving him the chance to do it is your best bet.
