Is your pup actually registered in Germany? If not I think you will have a hard time registering with AKC.
If you can not get the full registration with AKC they have the ILP program which will allow you to participate in most events. http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm
If your pup IS registered in Germany the foreign dog registy isn't too difficult. I don't send in the original papers either, I take my originals to a printer and get colored copies made.
All I got from the second owner was a copy of the sire's complete history and the mother's tattoo number and some other papers that are all in german. I was told she couldnt be registered in germany but could be with the AKC. But of course Im her 3rd owner so the info has been passed down a couple of times. I am going to send what I have to the AKC and see what happens. If anything I want her to participate in events when we get to the U.S. so I will try the ILP second. Thanks for the links.

I have had very good results emailing the foreign dog registy department. I'm pretty sure their email is on the website, if not let me know and I will dig it up through my old emails.
I was actually surprised at how responsive they were and how fast I got answers.
