My beautiful little male G.S. dog is five months old and is still teething. We tried to tape the one droopy ear up by it always sags a bit. Does anyone have any advice or even better pictures. I have searched the internet and of course this website but I really need a picture. I have been using a tampon, a little moleskin, and surgical tape. He doesn't pull it off or anything nor does he have big ears. Should I wait until he stops teething?
Has the ear been erect at all? If so, it will probably be fine all by itself - teething is a common time for puppy ears to "go south". If his ear has never stood up on it's own, then you can help it along by "training" it. Best way I've found is to get one of the larger pink hair-rollers, and glue that inside the ear, so ear is standing with support from this roller. Or, another way that is supposed to work is by glueing the ears together - put some glue on the very edge of one ear (glue on the outside of the ear, on the very edge closest to the other ear) and stick the outside edge of the ears together. I have tried lots of glues, and super-glue is the only one that works. I don't have a lot of experience in glueing or taping ears - only one puppy I have right now seems to have a lazy ear that I am helping along, just in case it decides to stay "lazy". I did try taping, but that only made the ear sore, bothered the pup, and actually caused some heat/swelling which made the ear even worse. Good luck! Remember - if the ear has been standing up on it's own before now, it will probably stand on it's own when pup is finished teething.
I just had the same issue with my pup - while he was teething his left ear dropped - for about a month and half - he is now 5 1/2, and in the last couple of days has picked itself up - and he has huge bat ears! - i wouldnt worry - if it has been up before it will come up again - teething can last upto and beyond 6 months - and this is the cause of the ears dropping. does he still have control over it? this is a good sign that it will go back up.
Thanks for all the tips. The issue is that that ear has NEVER been up and we were going to wait until he finished teething but then I was reading on leerburg page that it is good to start taping early. SO now I am trying. I think I have the taping thing okay - I do what this website said. Only when I do that the ear still sags to the right and I think that is wrong right?
It's better to tape both (even if only one needs it) and bridge them together with tape or a popsicle stick. Like this: ^-^
Surgical tape didn't last long on my hairy boy, a breeder recommended masking tape and it did work better. Surgical glue is best for taping stuff in the ear, you can get it at a medical pharmacy.
Yes as I found out teething is the major cause of dropped ears. My pups were up then they turned into Uni-ear then they were back up straight as could be, and now one is dropped again. She will be 5 months on the 10th so I am not to worried about it right now I am sure we will have several more ear phases before teething is over
