You are much nicer than I, Stephanie. My ex (operative word) used to say the same things. Good luck w/his search. Maybe his own dog to treat the way he wants to treat a dog will be good for Cerbie...but I think you need to have a laissez faire policy w/him concerning Cerbie if he cannot alter his ideas about how to treat a dog, particularly a dog of Cerbie's temperament.
Stephanie,
It's hard to judge your dogs reactions and what they mean without actually seeing them firsthand, but it sounds like you've just got one of those dogs (shrug).
But look at the bright side. Who, afterall wants a dog that is a constant pet me, pet me, love me, love me, pleeeze pet me all the time! We've all had gf's/bf's and lovers like that. It's just smothering and definitely gets old very quickly. It's not a knock on people that thrive in that kind of atmosphere but for most of us, space and independence is a bonus in a relationship. For my part it's the same thing with a dog, I expect some independence in my dogs. Very few want to be fondled all the time or for very long.
One more question on the dog. If my dog comes up to say hi and I just give her a quick hello scratch, she'll lay down at my feet and stay there unless I over do it with more petting. However if I don't bother her any more that's where she'll stay. Have you tried cutting the attention short of him having enough? What happens when you do?
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.
Randy
Cerbie can often be found lying quietly by me. I don't try to overdo it (most times!) I "get" him, and that's why our relationship seems to be so good. Of course, that's with the help and support I've received here (I just can't say it enough!) The bf has been a constant challenge (to Cerbie), and by next week he (and the new dog) won't be an issue. Cerbie and I are heading to Texas!
