This might be a weird question but thought I'd ask anyway. My youngest dog Sampson absolutely loves the ultra balls they sell here at Leerburg- will not play with anything else- I'll throw another type ball and he just sniffs it- anyway, I want to start working with him to see if he will play tug so I can be more a part of the reward instead of just throwing the ball. Do you think there is a way you can drill a hole in the ball and put a rope thru it or that won't work?? If not, has anyone seen a ball on a string that is comparable to a ultra ball?? If not, any suggestions how to get him to want to play with another toy? He may not even want to tug but I thought the best way to try would be with a toy that he is CRAZY over.
Actually one of the ultra's (have about 4) finally split on one side-how would that work with a rope? I've got an orbee with no rope- but he doesnt want to play with it, I guess I could put a rope back thru it and try ....
Just as something different, how about a little marker training for the Orbee? Using a clicker got my dog to retrieve a wooden dumbell. I know its not the same as the you may normally think about about building drive for a toy and that sort of thing. Anyone else have a thought about it?
Kodee's favorite balls are the Ultra-Balls as well. He will do everything but stand on his head to get you to play with one. But I thought I'd try the Orbee on a String, for tug, and turns out he LOVES it! Now, the rope has come out of it twice (we re-did the knot and put the rope back in a couple of times, but it keeps coming out). So now he just plays catch with it (we left the rope out, finally) like he did the Ultra Balls. Maybe playing tug with an Orbee w/the rope will get him interested in that particular ball.
Also, a lot of times when I'm playing w/Kodee, I will give him the command "Watch me" or "Touch", and the second he obeys, I throw the ball (or frisbee, or whatever toy we're playing with). That would be a good way to get your dog's attention on you (paying attention to you becomes more rewarding, if you know what I mean), and the type of toy hopefully will become secondary to that. Works great w/Kodee. Good luck and have fun!
