I use the command "Quiet". We learned in obedience class (oops bad word! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> ) When the dog is barking, hold a piece of food in your palm while saying "Quiet, good quiet". Only let the dog nibble not really eat it. After a couple of repititions, give him the food. If you have to, the alternate method is holding the dog's muzzle firmly but gently and repeating the same command. Then reward. My dog also knows the word "ENOUGH". Enough also means quiet, stop bugging/begging, stop what you are doing at that moment. It all generated from the quiet command.

An addendum to my previous post. A friend of mine had an English springer spaniel and used the quiet command to stop barking as well. The little devil then learned to cry and whine with his mouth shut. He could make the most incredible noises.
They never did get him to completely stop that behaviour. They used to call him "Motor Mouth". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
