I worked in emergency services and law enforcement for 20 years. The incidents we handled were covered in newspapers on a daily basis. Some of the reports of these events were so factually incorrect, it made for ludicrous reading for myself and coworkers who were actually there.
While I have little doubt the event happened, I don't put much faith into the article as a whole knowing what I do about how a story becomes entirely different when it ends up in black and white.
I agree it's insane. Why in the world would he have to pay a fine? That should be a freebie. I wonder if Dallas cops have to pay a fine for shooting someone that is shooting at them. Does the bad guy have to pay a fine if he shoots a store clerk? Interesting to say the least.
