Like the Private, they want clearly defined rules and regulations and a clear chain of command. It doesn't mean they have to be treated like crap- it just means they need structure to feel secure.
That's a really nice analogy Alyssa.

Yes, it is. If I were the O.P., I'd print it and hand it to my husband. Or maybe leave it somewhere, subtly. On his dinner, say.
Thanks for all the helpful info everybody. I did use that analogy with my husband and he understands its now.
I have discovered that this new dog prefers to go potty on my carpet rather than outside. I have taken him for long walks and he waits until he is inside to potty. I cleaned my carpets yesterday and within an hour he had done it again, and he was only out of my sight for a minute. Things are going much better today, I was ready to quit or runaway the day before yesterday after the boxer accidentally ran sideways into my leg causing it to hyperextend which caused me to drop like a rock to the ground. It is still very sore and difficult to do some things now. He is solid muscle and about 75 pounds, Bam right into my 50 year old unfit leg...lol

It only takes a minute for a dog to piddle/poo on the carpet, demolish a shoe or chew through a powercord and be electrocuted.
Don't let the dog be out of your sight.
Crate or tether at all times until the dog is 100% trustworthy.
