I have a 5 month old male GSD. I need a bit of help. Whenever he meets new people or dogs near where we live the hair on his back is always up until they stroke him,He doesn't show any other aggressive signs apart from this. After the intial meeting he relaxes and is EXTREMELY friendly. He also barks at nothing and the hair on his back is up Could this grow into a potential problem?
We take him into town once a week and he isn't like this with anyone in town. Nor is he like this with any dogs or people at obedience classes.
We have implemented rules and boundaries from the start of bringing him home. We have also adopted the NILF method of training. If he wants a stroke he's got to sit, go out: lie down etc.
He is a bit of a rough player with other puppies and generally he is veru obedient and gets on fine with our cats.
I guess I'm just a bit worried. Any help would be great
I just asked a similar question a week ago, and here's the link to that post and the responses... http://leerburg.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&topic=22001&gonew=1
In particular, I think Natalya's and Cindy Easton Rhodes' response were helpful in clarifying what is going on...and how to respond.
