Iwent to a PSA trial today, I wont pass judgement on the dogs performance since it is the only PSA trial Ive ever been to. However I found some exercises very interesting , like retreiving an empty plastic clorox jug through a window that was laying at the feet of a decoy in a bite suit dropping food infront of it. I just wondered if anybody has any comments one way or the other about PSA and also would there be any reason not to take a dog "that I have very high hopes for in shutzhund" to a PSA trial and getting some of their titles. Looks easy enough.

David, Have been dying to see a PSA trial, unfortunately none in the midwest yet. What other types of things did they test?
I have been seriously been attempting to do schutzhund and protection work at the same time, but the protection is pretty different between the two.(I couldn't get past bark and hold without causing serious problems with my dogs passive bit. Once I sent him he could either be called back or bite- no bark) There are many things that conflict. I'm sure a more experienced trainer might be able to. Have seen quite a few ringsport people doing protection sports though.
Im curious as to how old your dog is . My dog Im workin right now I got when she was 6 weeks old. I started workin with her then. I tauht her to sit and bark for her ball then. So the bark and hold hasnt been hard to teach with her.
Some other thins at the PSA trial was ,the helper firing a gun before the bite, 4 decoys all over the field during the exercises. I like the long distance down stay, the hanler puts the dog in a sit from a down and a down from a sit with his back to the dog. They also throw a box of empty plastic jugs towards the dog on a down stay. There were also toys laying all over the field during eveything. To me it looks like a good schutzhund dog that hits a bite suit would do fine. I know they change the routine every time they have a trial down to what object they have to retrieve.

I have been to 2 trials here in Fla. and was impressed by the dogs and the helpers, they place tremendous pressure on the dogs. I think PSA is a great sport, very similar to ASR. The only unfortunate occurance related to PSA (and I was forewarned by at least three people) was that there are a few TREMENDOUS egos in the organization, mainly from the North Carolina contingent.
