I think most of you guys know that Luc, while fine w/Teagan and Neb, is very uncomfortable/scared of strange dogs. It's one of the reasons why I adopted Teagan, so he could have an 'in-pack' dog friend. Me taking the lead on all strange dog interactions (so he doesn't have to) usually works just fine.
Anyways, Luc came with me today on my hike/trail run (it was supposed to be a trail run, but I forgot my snowshoes, and the first part of the trail was fine, but after that the snow load made it unrunnable, so while we did run where possible, it was mostly a hike).
In the first part of the trail, more heavily used, we met about 5 or 6 dogs, and Luc greeted 2 of them! That is huge for him! He greeted a older Kelpie and a Corgi puppy, did good with sniffing them and hanging out next to them. I was so proud! And he almost said hi to a Lab but then he got nervous. Still, it was a very good day for him
Thanks guys! Luc seemed interested in the lab (first dog we met), then got nervous, but he was obviously interested in greeting the other dogs, so I let him. Go Luc!
You know, I was thinking about it, b/c it really was a big deal for Luc. Luc LOVES being on the trail - hiking, running, backpacking - if we're on a trail, he is thrilled. He is in his element, very confident, very happy. There have been plenty of times on trail where he didn't want to greet another dog (including yesterday) but I was thinking that b/c he's so much more relaxed, happy, and confident on trails that probably made a difference.
The two dogs he greeted were also very calm, and friendly. Neither was hyper or excessively forward (the puppy was wriggly, but not pushy). I'm sure that made a difference as well.
