I haven't been here for a while, but hope to visit more often now.
Cleo is now 10 m/o and 100lbs.
Under Hawaii law, in order to take her out of State, I must vaccinate her for rabies. (Actually the process is rather involved and includes titer results and a TON of paper work) After much thought and agonizing, I have decided to vaccinate her so she can accompany Marisa and me on trips rather than leave her alone or board her for up to one month.
I have a couple of questions:
(1) She just finished her first heat about 2 weeks ago. Is there any reason not to vaccinate her now?
(2) Is there any difference between the 1 year and 3 year rabies vaccine. All factors being equal, I would rather give her the 3 year so I won't have to re-vac every year.
Get the 3 yr rabies. The only reason for the one year vaccine, is that dogs need yearly check-ups just like we do and vets say that your dog needs to "come in to be vaccinated", when in all reality they c=just want to make sure your dogs healthy.
And as far as giving the vaccine after her first heat cycle... I don't think that there's anything wrong with it, but maybe someone else might know better than me
Give her the 3 year...if they'll let you. I have heard b.s. about not giving the 3 year as the first rabies vacc. I just lied and said it was the second. But my dog was much older than 10mos...my dog was almost 3 the first time he was vaccinated and needed it to leave the country. Good luck.
We talked about this before- quit agonizing.
Either way, you'd have to vaccinate her; to board, or to fly with you.
The three year and the one year is the same damned shot.
Make sure they annotate the three year clearly on your paperwork, so you don't end up having to revac at one year because it wasn't clear enough.
I'd wait a month to be completely sure she is fully out of heat and her body has had time to readjust, and then yes, I'd go ahead and vaccinate now.
If it's any consolation, Danke will be getting her hips x-rayed and her first (and only) rabies vaccination in March.
