I am getting an 8-week old boxer in the next week. It is a 50/50 Euro/American mix, with the Euro pedigree coming from a working dog line. I want to train it to have the skills of a working dog, but because of my lifestyle/job others are going to have to help in watching after the dog; most likely after it is at least 8-months of age. I am in the military and leave for training for several weeks, so the dog is going to be cared for by a family memeber. Also, the dog is going to be around a lot of soldiers that will be interacting with it and I was wondering how best to go about training the dog so that it still has the drive and focus/skills of a working dog. I want to be able to enter the dog in Schutzhund competition, but want its bite work to be more advanced than that of a stricly competition dog. Thanks for the help.
Are you saying that you'll be leaving until the dog is over 8 months old?
Or that you won't have to leave until after the dog is over 8 months old?
My husband cares for my dog while I am away, and it hasn't harmed the dog, or it's bond with me.
But I was on 40 days of terminal leave when I got the pup, and I was on a garrison schedule for the first 9 months of the pups life, so we bonded pretty tightly.
I will not be leaving until AFTER the pup is about 8-mos old. So hopefully we will have a good bond. I am just trying to determine if I will be able to train the dog as more of a working dog when I am not the only person who will be caring for it. I know that to properly socialize a working dog, they have to be indifferent to anyone other than its handler, and should just be comfortable in different environments/situations... my issue is that it will be around a large group of people and i am not sure how to go about training it in the proper way so as to not impede upon its skills as a working dog... primarily in the area of bite training/personal protection... thanks again for the info...
My dog sees about 125 people coming to our training facility a week. My boxer is the meet and greet dog and the shepherd is indiferent. I do not allow any interactions with the shepherd. The only problem I have is really small children. Quincy loves little kids and will loose focus if I am not proactive.
