Linda,
the post that got all of our "hackles up" concerned your dog charging a "taco bell look alike dog" which in my mind is a Chihuahua or other very small dog. People hike in bear country with Taco bell dogs?
Either way, it's irresponsible (unresponsible?)of you to NOT have control of your dog... anyone who has a dog off lead needs to be in control of their dog, even in the back country where your dog could be injured or harrass wildlife or other hikers and their dogs. We also have bears in Wisconsin where I walk my dogs and guess what? My dogs wear an e-collar if I don't have a lead on them because using bears as an excuse to not have control of your dog is ridiculous.
Train your dog to be reliable off leash or keep him leashed. It's that simple. Dogs that are allowed to do what YOU allow your dog to do are part of the reason the original poster got such a reaction to her puppy in a pet store. I don't agree with this lady's reaction but I understand it.
Well said, Cindy! I too hike with my GSD in bear country (British Columbia West Kootenays) off leash, but he is under voice control and/or wears an e-collar for those exact same reasons that you've stated. Thank you for putting into words that I couldn't get out due to my mouth hanging open at Linda's "defense".
My apologies again, Maizie...
Linda: are you a troll or a moron?
The 1st post that 'got our hackes up' you had your dogs encountering other peoples' pets...
now you're warding off bears? You're WHAT!?! @#$#%
I believe she's both - I believe from prior post she has already had to have two dogs put down because they bit the mailman or somebody...and I believe she has caused trouble here before under a different last name...Linda Wayrynen maybe???
I can promise you that I won't think it is cute when a dog charges me or my guy...and I hope anyone that allows this to happen thinks it is cute when their charging dog is "decorated" with my .40 glock...or pepper spray - depending on my mood...
Maizie, you can't control others or their reactions...as long as you are keeping control of your dog - that is what is important and it sounds as if you did a wonderful job at doing that...
My guy is not aggressive but he doesn't feel the need to make a lot of friends either (guess maybe he got some of that from me ) but when out in public he behaves very well and focuses on me...that is what is important to me - the fact that he can and will focus on me no matter what is going on around him...it is a continuous learning process for both of us...
Best of luck!!
ps...my neighbor thinks my mal is a dingo...he even went as far to ask me if it was legal for me to have him...
I need to know what is up around the bend: bear, moose, cougar, etc by Linda Britton
I am REALLY, REALLY confused about this statement. You let your dog run ahead without a leash to warn you if there is a BEAR, MOOSE, or COUGAR? Ok, let's say the dog gets nailed by the BEAR, MOOSE, or Cougar while you are running towards the dog to find out what is going on. Then what? It sounds like an excuse.
I know there are factors that affect animals picking up scent et cetera. However, couldn't the dog do the same thing within your sight?
What about other animals, squirrels et cetera. If they are around, and I would think there are a few critters on the hiking trail, wouldn't they start taking off immediately because they SENSE DANGER from one of the aforementioned animals?
If your dog had charged my mother, she would have either sprayed him or nailed him with a stick.
You should RESPECT AND LOVE YOUR DOG ENOUGH TO KEEP HIM OUT OF HARMS WAY!
He/She would not hesitate to do that for you!
