I miss my Boxers, too.
But I wouldn't trade them at all for what I have in my little sable GSD.
You're going to be so pleased with your GSD.

When I was considering an akita for sport work, an akita breeder directed me to this page, which (along with what the breeder told me) sealed my decision to go with a GSD. This is not to say I agree absolutely with this individual's perspective, but helped me move past the desire to purchase an akita for said purposes and recognize that such desire was driven by novelty.

Now for something completely different.
Depending on how serious/how far you want to go in the ring, and using perhaps some different methodologies, I don't know why you couldn't work any dog you wanted in the ring. After all, it's about you and the dog. It's about you and the dog communicating, working and having fun together.
It could get frustrating working through some of the hurdles some breeds would present in the ring, but if overcome may make it all that much more satisfying.
Just another perspective.

True.
Keeping in mind that a sport dog, does not automatically a protection dog make.
Heck, if Mr. Murphy would do the bitework, any dog, in theory, could.

I've only met a couple of Akitas in my life. If they were indicative of the breed, I can see where they might present some ummm unique challenges for the ring.
lol I think the bite work would be the easy part. The hard part would be getting the dog to stop.
As I think you said Alyssa, ob is not one of the breeds strongest points (pretty hard head that lot).
What of tracking? Think tracking would be an issue?

That's a good question.
I haven't the foggiest notion. Their snout is a little shorter and blunter than a GSD, but if Rotties and Boxers can track, I see no fundamental reason why an Akita couldn't.
Overheating might be an issue in all the phases, but it might become more pronounced in the tracking.
Article indication may become a bit of a battle, until the dog understands that it can return to the track, if only it will take the time to indicate and wait for the handler.
I'm sure Akitas can do sport work, at some level. My biggest worries would be stubborness, and dirty bitework.
(And being horribly allergic to dogs, I personally wouldn't be very appreciative of having to do helper work with a furball like an Akita.)

I would think it would be a lot like trying to get a husky to do the work.
BUT only if they wanted to on that particular day and time.
They are a breed I have looked into because I love the way they look, from what I read they tend to have similar temperaments to other northern breeds, being independent and stubborn and somewhat (or very) willfull.
I chose not to go with an Akita because I felt it wasn't the best breed for a household with children and other pets.

Akitas are great with children if raised with them, My akita and my youngest daughter were the same age, and I trusted him with her, other children and pets is another story.

I know they can be, I have known some absolutly wonderful Akitas,
It just didn't seem like the best choice of dog for our family at the time, especially with the two hounds we already had.
An Akita is on my list of breeds I would like to own some day, and after the Challenge that is my current pup Yote I think I will be able and ready to take on any dog!!
