My Am Staff so far acts this way every time she meets a tall (over 6'2") man with a lot of facial hair....It has happened 3 times now. Usually she is oooohhhhhhh don't you want to pet me I am sooooooo cute, as she trembles like she is going to explode in her sit, stay. But bring on a tall guy with a beard and it is a whole different ball game....I just wrote it off to "she has issues"...so many and so little time to correct them all...maybe it's me that doesn't like tall guys with big ole beards and she is reading me...hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Loki is afraid of men in cowboy hats. He will turn into a ball of mush and sit behind me trembling and barking. Chad wears a baseball hat almost all the time and Loki has no problem with that, but cowboy hats on men scare the hell out of him. He is not afraid of women wearing them though, which is even weirder.
I can also say without a doubt that since birth nothing bad has ever happened to him in the presence of a cowboy hat, or by someone wearing one.....so who knows!

And I do trust Teagan, b/c, in my experience, outside of her judgement around strange dogs (heh) she's pretty smart and reacts appropriately and well in good and 'bad' sitautions.
Alyssa, that is impressive!
Tanith, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a hormones thing, if only b/c where I lived before (top floor of a house) our handylady was a friend of my landlord (bottom 2 floors) and she was trans, and not fully transitioned (OHIP stopped paying for the surgeries, so she had all the hormones and stuff, but still had her bits). We were all friendly, and at a party once her partner was going into quite the bit of detail....but that's a whole other thread Anyways, Teagan has met and been around a transperson before, and been totally fine (she really liked Michelle).
Valerie, he is tall. But she's met other tall men.
Huh. Now I'm going to be all curious about how he behaves and acts pretty much forever! ....Interesting.
Edit: Jen, that is weird! Just men in cowboy hats...huh.

I guess, what I don't get, even more than her having an issue with him, is that she's nervous - she's NEVER nervous! I would have expected her to react differently if she didn't like him. I guess backing up a couple of feet and barking isn't a big deal, but it's as much how she's expressing her discomfort as that she has discomfort.
....Guess I just have to get used to the idea that my unflappable (outside of strange dogs, goes without saying) dog can get freaked out!

I think its maybe because he can't see their face??
He is afraid of other things too, angry cats, the vacuum, lawnmowers and chainsaws. But as far as people go he loves everyone that isn't wearing a cowboy hat.

That would make sense. I've heard of people who had dogs that freaked out come winter, b/c all of sudden people (who they knew, I think it was the owners) were appearing in these bizarre jackets and hats and had scarves etc.....forget where I read that though.

You said he has dogs... Could she have been reacting to the smell of them on him, maybe there was something off about the way one of them smelled?
how did your other dogs react to him?

I wondered that, but his wife was there too and no reaction.
And nervousness would be a really weird reaction vis-a-vis dogs for her. I know both the dogs very well, and they're both lightweights next to her in terms of dog-on-dog interaction and interest in rank, so I don't think it was anything about their dogs either, if such a thing could even occur.
Luc was over leaning against him giving him the sad 'nobody pays any attention to me' eyes, and Neb went over to say hi and was fine until Teagan barked; then he did too (which I did NOT like; I purposely don't walk Neb and Teagan together anywhere where we are likely to meet strange dogs b/c I don't want him modelling her behaviour, and I wasn't happy he picked up on her barking last night either).
edit: Like the new sig pic!

Thanks!
He makes a lovely window dressing
And the fact that he can calmly sit with the cat right next to him is something I never thought I would see with him, but he is great with them now 99% of the time.
He is nervous around new people and will do almost exactly what you described, go up to sniff and be pet a little and then back away a few feet and put his ears back and bark.
Once they actually come in and sit down though he is ok with them.
