Follow up: I took him in on Saturday for his heart worm, internal parasite and lyme disease tests, etc. and had them check out the lump. The vet said it is possibly an infection and prescribed two weeks worth of antibiotics (Cephalexin I think). 2x500mg pills in the morning, 2 more at night. She also mentioned that some forms of cancer can present in such a manner, which scared the bejeezus out of me.
She also stated that she recommends getting him neutered to minimize risks of potential cancers.
She wouldn't drop the fact that I hadn't gotten him his 3-year rabies vaccine yet since he was overdue. I stated my concerns regarding potential side effects, to which she replied that she has only seen those in cats. Michigan won't accept titer tests instead of the actual vaccine, either. She stated that she would see Apollo back in two weeks to check his progress and give him the rabies vaccine. That kinda ticked me off.

For the present, at least, Lee, this is something to hold her off like garlic with a vampire: a sick dog is never vaccinated. Please do not allow the vet to "forget" that.
On antibiotics for infection? No vax. Undiagnosed illness? No vax.
Thanks Connie, that was my reasoning for not getting him the vaccine on Saturday when she had him in the office. She agreed. However her assuming she will administer the rabies vaccine upon our return in two weeks really irked me.
It is a shame because that particular office has been great, they only have two vets and this is the first time I have seen this particular one. Next time I will make an appointment (this had to be walk in, all their appointments were taken on Saturday) and schedule it with the other vet whom I like.
Oh, I didn't realize they might report me... well I have two weeks anyway to try and find a holistic vet that might give him a titer instead and issue his license then. Thank you Connie!

Well, I probably way over-generalized. Here where I live, we have to have the animal licensed. That cannot happen without the rabies vax (or a vet excuse for why an animal can't be vaccinated, and titers, in some places).
An unlicensed animal can result in a fine (and a seizure if non-compliance continues) in some places.
But again, I am sure I over-generalized, and I actually cannot picture my own vet actually reporting me. OTOH, maybe they must. Maybe there is state/local law requiring it.

A vet *could* report you but I highly doubt many would. I know of no vet in my area who does. It's an issue for the duration of your office visit and then it's forgotten by the vet as they go on to their next patient.
Here, vets must, by law, submit a monthly rabies report to the county of all animals who received a rabies vaccine. That's how you get on the city/county radar and why you get notices about licensing.
