My youngest dog, 3 1/2 yrs, doesn't enjoy being pet. Which I know some dogs don't. He likes to be patted, anywhere, even roughly, or scratched behind the eyeballs, but no petting-and definitely no grooming. He will actually yelp, and even submissively pee, for touching where he doesn't want to be touched. But patting these areas is fine. Grooming always brings about peeing. I groom the other dogs first, I run him to wear him down to relax him. He has never had a bad experience with grooming. I've tried treating and grooming.
He is a very sensitive "flower", no rough-housing of any sorts, which again is okay, all dogs are different, and I have my big beast of a Hogan I can wrestle with whenever the urge strikes.
I find it odd to be sooooo sensitive to touch, does anyone else have this problem?
I have one who would totally shut down if I tried to rough house with him, this afternoon I went to kick a ball for him and I guess I was too close and he flinched and hit the ground like I was going to kick him in the face. (he has never been hit or kicked or spanked) He loves to be massaged or rubbed, but hates patting and will flinch away from it if it is anything other than slow and extremely gentle patting. He is just a very sensitive dog.
He acts scared of the brush too so I got a rubber type glove that has nubbies on it like a curry comb. I think it is supposed to be for cats and I can then get all the loose hair out and dirt without freaking him out.
But he has very short hair so I don't know if that would work for you.
On the other hand, my other one loves to rough house, and will let me cradle him, manipulate his body every which way and he loves those deep almost thumping pats on his chest and sides.
Well that makes me feel a little better. He is such a great dog otherwise.
Interesting to say that Alyssa, my new trainer told me he was extremely pressure, handler sensitive. That is why I was having trouble handling him in agility. I was giving mixed signals from him trying to read me, and putting too much pressure on him. I've trained him with markers since he was a puppy, and did nothing but positive training with him. He is very bright, and after only 1 session with her, it was like the light came on. He liked her instantly, which he doesn't like anyone, and would work for her the second session. I was so amazed. It felt so good. She grew up with shepherds and is into herding. It was great to have someone explain things to me and show me what pressure is.
I still want to read that book Animals in Translation.
