Good point about the pack member status. That hadn't sunk into my brain.
That is why my own cats are safe, while other cats and outdoor cats are anything but safe. To yote the cats are part of the pack and the cats generally behave as if they are as well.
i was only able to read the 2nd link, but nonetheless, the term "predatory drift" isn't well-defined. sounds like garbage to me, but i will (tomorrow), search ethology terms to see if i can find that term. from what i've seen here--well, no one has really defined "predatory drift" and the term itself doesn't make much sense to me.
if i find anything else, i'll post the link, if i don't, i'll say so. at this point, sounds to me like prey drive...
The above suggests predatory drift is based loosely on a scientific idea of instinctive drift. http://www.wpsardc.org/breland,%20breland%20(1961)%20-%20misbehavior%20of%20organisms.pdf
However, how someone went from scientifically document behavior of training to the "science" of predatory drift must have involved a GREAT leap.
Ann, I would be VERY interested to hear what you find. To excuse bad behavior based upon the "predatory drift" theory and encourage people to say "oh, well, that's just a dog's instinct" is wrong. After hearing from all of you, I am convinced this is a misplaced and misused term.
And, the statement of cats being pack members also has good merit. (However, Noodle is still a little jerk and needs to be watched while with the dogs. )
the problem i have with Dr. Ha (haha) is that, while he states his research is in primate behavior, his publications seem to be devoted to bird behavior. but, in the academic world the phrase "publish or perish" applies. and perhaps his primate studies are very long-term.
at any rate, his thoughts on canine behavior seem to me to be on-target. FWIW!
