I have been doing alot of research on GSD's for the past 4 months. I think the best resource I found was this site. That being said I will be picking up my new puppie next month. I seem to have everything I can think of: training DVD's, leashes/leads, collers, tugs, supplements, crates, and a new freezer for the raw diet.
So after all that I thought finding a good vet would be easy but, I was oh so wrong. I have been through half the Yellow pages and I can't find any one that will recommend a raw diet. They all warn me that it is the wrong thing to do, and that I am putting the health of my new puppie as well as my family at risk
If any one knows of a good vet near Savannah that is familiar with or better yet recomends a raw diet please let me know. And thanks in advance for the help.
My experience has been that hardly any vets will recommend a raw diet. Most vets have no knowledge or experience of raw feeding. My current vet (who I really like) also pointed out to me that even vets in favor of raw hesitate to recommend it, unless they think an owner has the the knowledge, commitment and resources to do raw feeding right.
I look for a vet who listens to me, knows his or her stuff, handles my dog well, and will work with me on minimal vaccination. I tell my vets that I feed raw, and I provide details if they are interested, but I have learned not to expect much in the way of informed support from them on it. If I am happy with the vet otherwise, then I settle for mutual agreement that I am going to do my thing on the raw feeding and it's not up for debate. Any vet who won't accept that loses my business.
Having a healthy raw fed dog with shining coat and white teeth in front of us usually makes the point effectively, anyway.

The most I hope for (and I have this) is a vet who accepts my decision and never uses scare tactics or tries to use raw feeding as the default reason for any health issue.
She will say "Well, I cannot argue with your results."
I believe that her fear (and it's valid, I have found over the years on web sites) involves folks who decide to start raw and give the dog hamburger. Period.
Thank you Connie and Sarah,
I have made apt's with 2 Vets in my area that were not totally opposed to a raw diet over the phone. Mabey I just need to lower my expectations on this one subject so long as they are caring Dr's. Thats really all that matters.
I am really greatfull for this board, I have so many questions right now and I am sure I am going to have more in the future.
