Have any one here ever been on a date where everytime you try and start a dialog or conversation your date just rambles on about something completely unrelated?
So by the end of the evening both of you are really talking only to yourself, because no one else is listening?
I would tether until he seems bonded, seeking out attention and affection, following your lead in situations where he is unsure.
the easiest way I have found to tether is by wearing a belt and using a caribener to hook the leash to the belt.
I have ripped out belt loops in several pants by not using a belt
Been doing the tethering this afternoon and it is going great. Thanks for all the help.
As far as plans for him - not sure what his potential is. Maybe I'll visit the schutzhund club but I believe the dog would have needed to be raised with it. Is this true?
When he is older I'll take him to work with me.

What is your definition of "hard"? (or "soft")
Are you agreeing with "keep-away"? Or is this really a game (rather than non-compliance with the recall)?
What do you mean by "not let them pet him"? Backing off, growling, what?

How long have you had this pup?

... You think the previous owner handled him rough(?), why? Does he shy away from handling his collar? .... How long have you had this dog? .... have you had the dog long enough for any bonding to take place? ....

EXCELLENT! Tethering became a new rule for me a few years ago after folks on this very board mentioned doing it even with newly-acquired adults (not just new puppies). Now I will probably never skip it with a new adoptee.
