I was watching a Leerburg video about the restrained recall and I have a few questions. Is it ok that the person holding the dog back is my husband? Unfortunately I don't trust anyone I know here in town to handle or help me with my dog, people have such crazy ideas about dogs. I think almost everyone I know here has asked why I don't beat him into obedience or just laugh at me for trying to train him at all so it is impossible for me to get anyone but my husband to help. The reason I like this method is the recall has been a struggle for me, if Loki knows I have a treat or a fun toy he is glued to me and is too excited to stay long enough for me to stray too far...Also, I have no plans for him to go into sports, is the restrained recall mostly used for sport training? It just looks like so much fun, especially now that we're moving into a house with a yard!! What a luxury
I bribed my daughter into helping. I have been having some recall issues lately, and thought this method looked like a BLAST for the dog. I even bought the big fleece toy . I have to say WOW but it works! My dog's biggest recall problem is his distractability by squirrels, rabbits, etc. Using a whistle to get his attention, then a moving, fun prey item seems to be the magic formula he can't resist.
Now he's crazy to get to me every time he hears the whistle . I love it! What a great method!
When I taught puppy classes we would get the whole family involved in the recall.
Everyone would sit around the room taking turns holding the pup while another family member called the pup.
The caller would then become the holder for the next caller.
With a young pup don't put to much distance between people. Their little minds can "get lost" on the way to the next person.
