As an update: my training session with my young male last night and tonight went very well with NO backing up. We worked on sit and down (things I taught him before the back up) last night and tonight at sitting in heel position. I worked in a tiny room where there was no room to back up and used my marker word rather than the clicker. So far, so good! Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'll try to phase the clicker back in when he is solid on more behaviours.
Update: We've been working on sit, down, stand, and fuss in the kitchen after being successful in my tiny room where there was no room to back up. He now gets that I want him to do other things and rarely tries it (backing up) anymore (but still does occasionally). I've even been able to use the clicker every now and then. He's coming along well and we have fun, and he is learning his new commands very well.
