LOVE it!!! I just discovered shaping and it IS a blast!!
For anyone with puppies - I highly recommend doing some shaping early on, so they grow up being familiar with spontaneously using their brains. Oscar was taught using luring his whole life, now, at 4 y/o, he's slow to offer behaviors because he's always waiting for me to "show him" what to do. He's getting it though.
Thanks for sharing Steven - I can't wait to see how this progresses! Do you think you could get him to eventually separate out the recyclables??
LOVE IT! I've been doing more shaping recently and Kota enjoys it more than luring, his frustrations really drive him. He definitely remembers the exercise better too!! I think if I taught him to put away the garbage, he might start looking for garbage
I've been (shaping) teaching him to put his toys away and put away my dirty laundry The other day he had one leg of my pants in his mouth and was stepping on the other leg. He was so determined and frustrated it was SO entertaining! This went on for a good two or three minutes of pulling the pant leg, getting frustrated, dropping it, snorting at me, pulling the pant leg, etc. He finally got it and we had a big happy party. I wish I had video taped that.
I've also found this is the best way to teach an old dog tug with an orbee; he got it much quicker than treats in a sock.
OMG!!!! He just threw himself into the garbage, poor dog, LMAO!!!
Awesome variation of the retrieve exercise, that's just brilliant. Every time I'm impressed by something you've trained, you come up with some brand new completely innovative exercise that just makes me want to run out and try for myself with my dogs
(You really gotta do something about that wind though.
Get rid of it for next time so poor Eich doesn't have to get flustered from all his hard work getting undone - or blown away, in this case.)
He did not jump INTO the garbage. He went over it...this time.
Oh fine, not AS funny, but that's ok.
It must be awesome to work with such a hugely driven dog that takes so much initiative he's constantly coming up with all kinds of unintended but hilarious behaviours. No one can claim you aren't challenging that brain of his
