I know the question is kind of weak but what is the deffinition of calm and submissive as referred to in the pack structure dvd? Does that mean absolutely no whining ever in the crate no barking what? Our dog is 1-1/2 yrs old we went to a trainer that had us crate him and keep him on a leash but never explained why we did it for a while. Now I know why he told us to do it and we are putting him through the training as described on the dvd. Heinrich is very good in his crate he gets excited when he sees us coming but will sit down when requested and we let him out to go outside. He goes back in willingly and lays down but he will occasionaly bark at noises and may whine once in a while if he hears us talking or sees us when the door is open. The dvd as a whole is very good but somethings are a little vague to me. Any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian
The behaviour you want to see is a dog who is relaxed in his crate, not freaking out in panic or demanding that you let him out. Calm is of course relaxed and settled, and submissive means he is accepting of your leadership. He will do as he is asked and accept that you as the human know what is best for him. He does not try and make his own decision (time for me to come out now!) or try to take over.
Barking at noises is acceptable (at least to me), as most dogs will alert to anything new. It does not mean the dog is being demanding or asking for anything, but just letting you know he has detected something is amiss and is calling you to check it out. I would suggest that his whining is probably excitement or happiness to see his humans.
This is how I understand it anyway. Sounds like you have a very nice dog.
I don't get upset when a dog is whining (a little) or lets loose a bark while in the kennel ... but i also don't let them out
A dog who is whining or barking is not calm (yet), i want them to be really relaxed when i let them out of their kennels/rooms. I only correct for barking/whining if it becomes incessant ... otherwise i wait 'em out
and ditto on what Angela said regarding what submissive behavior is!
Yes Heinrich's a pretty good boy in the kennel and in the house but it's his behavior outside of it that we are working on I don't want a 100 lbs german shepherd making his own decisions. I figured he was already beyond the isolation faze of the training but we decided to start from the beginning he's probably going to get paroled this weekend.
