Yeah its has been a bad habit but my gf and I have let our two dogs wrestler in the house quite a bit. No real fights to speak of just two which were broken up with a harsh no and enough. Nothing major just more aggressive barks/snaps. But its getting to the point where my younger mix is getting annoying towards the older one and she is getting crabbier in her old age it seems. I know I shouldn't let them wrestle anyway but whats the best way to stop it.
Teether them in the house? They are never left alone and always crated when we are gone
Well, now you know the best way is to not let it start to begin with.
I am not experienced with big dogs and am not a working dog owner. I just have a little ankle biter, but have had large dogs in the past.
But, for my 2 cents, tether the young dog to you. Start reading about pack structure and be a pack leader so both dogs know that only you decide when and if they wrestle, play, eat, fetch, etc.
I think there are also some articles, books, etc. on here about multi-dog issues. You want them to respect you as the pack leader and not get 'doggy'.
I have the popularDVD's and read the articles I was just wondering if anyone had any of ideas or if that was the best way to do it? I tried it last night and it took a couple of corrections but they got it.
I have a 18 week old Dobe and a 10.5 year old yellow lab.
The young one wants to play all the time and the older one just wants to enjoy her golden years.
So, pack leadership is paramount. You have to watch them like a hawk and redirect/lead/correct as necessary. If you see them doing something you don't want them to do - make sure they know it. Get their attention, separate them, and then give them something else to do.
I NEVER leave the two of them unattended except when the younger one is locked in his crate.
I agree and thanks for the response. I never leave them unattended and they have been doing much better so I'm glad see that. I'm not really tethering them anymore, if they start its quickly put to an end.
