In about 3 weeks, I get a 10' x 20' x 6' kennel set up for Lucy.
It will have a frame for a tarp roof over the 10' x 10' area and the rest will be open. I plan on having a lock on the gate (still deciding how to do that with what kind of lock) and an insulated dogbox in the kennel.
Eventually I plan on putting pea gravel or something on the ground inside the kennel, but for now, it is on part of a driveway I don't use anymore so there is some gravel under the grass.
What I haven't decided on was a windbreak. I can't put the kennel up against the house, so that shoots down one idea and I don't have a garage so can't butt it up against a garage.
I had initially planned on putting the kennel near the pine trees, but that is kind of a sink, and would get "marshy" during and after a rain. So, I can put up straw around the outside (might have fleas--ugh) or I could put up plywood halfway up the kennel and paint it a pretty white, but she wouldn't get to see out (she is a shorty).
What do you all do for windbreak?

Edit reason: clarity
One option is suncreen material. Another is slating material. resembles the "blind" part of venitian blinds. They make it in a vinyl that is woven in and out of the chain link. Good choice on the "sink" area. Remember, those will certainly breed 'skeeters during the wet season.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
We used inexpensive exterior siding panels 6'x8'. We drilled holes in the 4 corners and used the types of clips you would see at the end of a dog leash to hang/attach it on the chain link. It is easy to remove it needed and seems to be working just fine.
The ideas are great. I haven't decided yet on what I am going to use, but I do have time. Windbreak needs to up before winter since kennel is on west side of house...the ONLY place to put it, unfortunately.
I may get one more panel (with a gate) to cut the kennel into two 10' x 10'. Leave the gate open, but windbreak the interior panel (except the door), and the 3 outside panels of roofed 10' x 10', leaving the other 10' x 10' section open. Then she has the option of staying inside the paneled windbroke (?) section or going out through the gate into the open section. Workable? Stupid idea? I've been stupid before, so don't hesitate to tell me.
