Do you want a Vet simply to give annual check-ups and vaccinations? On that note, what are your beliefs about vaccinations? Is it important to you that the Vet share your attitudes, or are you willing to ignore what you consider to be "bad advice"?
Do you desire to spay/neuter your animal, or would you prefer it left intact? Why or why not? Is the Vets attitude in this respect important to you?
What sort of diet are you currently feeding? Do you feel adequately educated in regards to canine nutrition? Are you comfortable with your level of education, or do you feel you need a Vet who can assist you in learning?
Are you a strong, independant pet owner who can resist urging from a Vet that you feel to be inappropriate for your animal(s)?
Are you willing to travel well out of your way to have your animal treated by a holistic vet?
Are you willing to travel out of your way for specialty care (Hip XRays, etc)?

I would suggest, if you have it narrowed down to one or two vets after you ask your questions, to take your dog in for a simple wellness exam.
Some vets (and techs) have very poor animal handling skills, which is stressful for both you and your dog. I can "agree to disagree" with my vet about a lot of things but if he/she is rough, overly-nervous, or dispassionate about their client I really don't want them handling my dog.
Websites are nice.
I like the ones that have the "tour" of the clinic.
You can weed out a ton of vets by looking at a picture of their reception area. 50%+ have bags of Science Diet on display.
A pretty good indication of the vet's priorities.
